The nurse midwife has been a part of the  women’s healthcare field for a very long time. They have actually been documented back to centuries ago when healthcare was next to non-existent. Their sole purpose is to assist a woman through a pregnancy. They offer support services from the start of conception, through the pregnancy and even during delivery and aftercare periods. The term midwife is translated as with woman and they do not work with any male patients.

The midwife who is certified is a form of registered nurse. They have gone through approved nurse schooling, obtained a diploma or degree and passed state licensure exams. Some midwives are even found to be running their own practice.

The traditional midwife integrates old fashioned birthing procedures with today’s up to date medical practices. Although, the practice of a midwife is more traditional based and therefore childbirth is more non-technology based. Childbirth is promoted to be more natural when there is a midwife present. Medicines and other pain relievers are commonly advised against and more mentally focused pain relief measures are practiced.

The women’s health nurse practitioner is also a form of a registered nurse. Their main job is to provide women primary health care services. Their services focus on conditions that are specific to a woman like menopause. Other responsibilities of the women’s health nurse practitioner include counseling, consultation and education services to the community’s women residents. Those found working in this position are very educated and have received very advanced credentials in order to practice in their position.
